Our way of describing the history of Ireland is now distant and unfamiliar. It is no longer in the songs and stories of the people, being now confined to the printed page and academia. It’s disconnected from the soil, and by focusing so exclusively on logical, linear thought it misses so much. It is history without voice or energy – history without soul or spirit to thrust it into the present. The historical journal has its place and is extremely valuable, as long as it is combined with walking and feeling the earth, and ideally also with the immersion in the mythology.
